A Simmer's Survey

>> Saturday, July 11, 2009

Just because I find this stuff fascinating! I'll be starting next week with the actual storyline for Fall (I think I've been in summer now for something like two months), but in the meantime, I'd like to get to hear more from other players about how they play either Sims 2 or 3.

How closely do you pay attention to the personality points in TS2?

What is your favorite way to play? (Curled up with a laptop on a weekend day? Sitting at a desk in the evening while watching TV?)

Do you like to keep records? (And my follow up would be what you keep track of.)

Do you still play "the game" or do you use it in other ways (like story telling or playing through stories rather than playing to ensure your sims get their LTW)?

How often do you play and for how long?

Do you read a lot of simming blogs?

Do you have anything you're curious about?

I sit at a desk with a mirror so I can see the TV too. LOL

What do you mean?

I like to make movies, make stories, and just play for fun.
How often do you play and for how long?
I don't play for hours like I used to. LOL I play for maybe a half an hour a day.
Do you read a lot of simming blogs?
Absolutely!
Do you have anything you're curious about?
What The Sims 3 would be like if it was actually a "good" game. :(

I try to keep it in mind especially because I use a traits system but sometimes I have a certain perception of my Sims and I follow that

I'm a curled up on the couch kinda girl

I keep scary extensive records. Everything from birth season to affairs to college majors. So many records

Do you still play "the game" or do you use it in other ways (like story telling or playing through stories rather than playing to ensure your sims get their LTW)?

I'm tend to play through stories so while my stories are detailed my Sims actually have to live these experiences.

How often do you play and for how long?

Whenever I get time. I'm trying to shoot for 2x a week for 2-3 hrs.

Do you read a lot of simming blogs?

I read a few especially ones that have a new approach on gameplay

Yay, surveys are always fun! Lunar, are you going to answer these too? ;)

*How closely do you pay attention to the personality points?* Very closely, I suppose. It affects the kind of wants they roll, the things they do, and distinguishes them from each other in character, so I find them pretty important. I tend to interpret the points though, so that not everybody's sloppy or grouchy or playful means the same thing. I'm a big believer in zodiacs in RL, so I pay attention to those too ;)

*What is your favorite way to play?* LOL, whatever way I can get? I have a toddler in the house, I don't get to be that picky ;)

*Do you like to keep records?* Definitely, lol, just look at my blog!

*Do you still play "the game" or do you use it in other ways?* This is a tricky question. I'm not really sure if I play it as a game so much as tell stories through it.

*How often do you play and for how long?* Usually about an hour during the rugrat's "quiet time". Maybe twice a week I'll take a larger chunk of time at night, usually to finish off an update, or concentrate on a particular scene I want to shoot.

*Do you read a lot of simming blogs?* I have a few favorites! I'm a sucker for artistic pictures and good character development :)

I'm answering all this about TS2. I play TS3 pretty haphazardly, which is the main reason I'm not blogging it.

How closely do you pay attention to the personality points in TS2?

I often forget to look at them. I find Sims' personalities tend to show themselves to me eventually anyway, without me looking at the points. Some Sims seem to act counter to their personality points anyway.

What is your favorite way to play?
I have a desktop, so sitting at my desk is a necessity. But I turn to the side, put my feet up on the desk and have the keyboard on my lap. I prefer to be alone in the room too.

Do you like to keep records? (And my follow up would be what you keep track of.)
I keep track of everything. Some of it I use on my blog, some I don't. I keep track of ages, careers and family relations on my blog but I also keep a milestones list where I keep track of how old a Sim was when they got married, woohooed, etc. I say etc. but currently there isn't one because I can't find where I kept track of the rest of it! I'll have to start it up again.

Do you still play "the game" or do you use it in other ways (like story telling or playing through stories rather than playing to ensure your sims get their LTW)?
I do play the game, in that basically, my Sims do what they have the want to do and I generally will try to get them into the career they want. Some careers don't fit them or the career doesn't fit into my hood, so I ignore those. And sometimes, I don't feel like getting you 20 Lovers, random Sim, so you can just deal with it.

But anyway, I've always loved making lists and pretending to be organised, so Sims is an extension of that.

How often do you play and for how long?
I play most days and I usually get a few hours.

Do you read a lot of simming blogs?
My Google Reader is chock full of them. There are many more than I have linked to on my blog. The ones I have linked to on my blog are my favourites and the ones that I almost always comment on.

Oh this is all so neat! Thanks for taking the time to answer everyone.

My responses:

How closely do you pay attention to the personality points in TS2?

I'll have to steal Carla's answer above me, because she worded it better and said the same thing. I don't look at their points, but often a sim's personality is clear in their actions. And sometimes they actually act contrary to their own personality, or there is some odd combination of aspiration and personality that make them act contrary to the points.

What is your favorite way to play? (Curled up with a laptop on a weekend day? Sitting at a desk in the evening while watching TV?)

Sims 3 I play on my laptop curled in my chair in front of the TV.

Sims 2, I play at a desk that sits in a corner facing away from the TV. Usually I put on head phones too and listen to music while listening to the sounds of the game. (I might steal Anthony's idea though and get a mirror put up in the room so I can watch the TV without turning around!)

Do you like to keep records? (And my follow up would be what you keep track of.)

I would love to keep track, but I am lazy and not that organized.

The only thing I keep track of for sure are ages which I have in a spreadsheet so I can move everyone up each year. I do use Flashnote now to keep notes, like what so-and-so's writing about if I have them start a novel.

The only other thing I do regularly is make to-do lists. Usually, it's just a file where I delete what's been accomplished, but for the summer season I actually printed out a list so I could have it physically in front of me. You should have seen it! Maybe I'll post a picture. XD

Do you still play "the game" or do you use it in other ways (like story telling or playing through stories rather than playing to ensure your sims get their LTW)?

I think I do a mix. I don't keep track of LTWs and I don't work to fulfill them, but I do listen to their wants and will use that to suggest stories.

It's more about setting up situations and running tests. A lot of my entries start out with me going "What if..." and then play testing it.

How often do you play and for how long?

TS3 I play for an hour or two a couple times a week right after dinner.

TS2 I usually save for the weekends when I can play for four hours or so at a time, generally once a week. If I've played enough to have entries ready ahead of time, I usually take a break.

Do you read a lot of simming blogs?

I think I subscribe to a lot, but a lot of them don't update very often. There are a couple that update regularly that I try my best to read and comment on right away. You guys perk up my workdays. :)

Oh man! Was I ever having a hard time posting this. It just wouldn't post. I just realized that it's because I was missing an ending tag. OOPS!

This provided for a nice distraction from the sun-burns I have on the top of my head :)

Like you I have to borrow Clara’s reply for that one. I tend to glance at it, though it doesn’t leave much of an impression on me and I usually end up going; “WTH? You’ve got ONE nice point? What?” I’ve always been terrible about keeping tabs on personality points once the sim is actually in the game, I’ve sort of given up on it I think xD

What is your favorite way to play? (Curled up with a laptop on a weekend day? Sitting at a desk in the evening while watching TV?)
I play on my desktop computer, so I don’t really have much of a choice in the matter. I can stretch out my legs on the drawer that’s just next to the desk. My TV is just behind me and I tend to keep that off while playing because I get awfully distracted (and my neck starts to hurt because I’m constantly looking behind me). I have to firm playing schedule, though more often than not I tend to play on Mondays and Tusedays although I do play on other days too.

Do you like to keep records? (And my follow up would be what you keep track of.)
I’ve found that I’m quite a list creature, I’ll make a list for just about anything (however I’m also a very messy person, you should see my room!), but even so I don’t have as many lists for sims stuff. I have an excel sheet were I have the ages listed, but beyond that I don’t actually keep that many lists. I think I will have to make a list over students and their grades as well as the ages of townies, but beyond that I don’t keep many records.

Do you still play "the game" or do you use it in other ways (like story telling or playing through stories rather than playing to ensure your sims get their LTW)?
I play it mostly, I’ll fiddle around with posing now and then and go straight back to playing. I do add some background and story to what happens, but I don’t tend to set up story events etc. Unless I truly need to. I don’t play towards LTW though, I never have. I’m not precisely sure what I play for, seeing the town and the sims develop? Seeing how their decisions affect their friends and themselves? Yeah, that’s probably it.

How often do you play and for how long?
It depends, I don’t play often, but when I do play I can play for hours. I do try to play once a week, to keep on top of things.

Do you read a lot of simming blogs?
Quite a few, though I don’t always read the update the minute it comes out. I do that with some blogs, while others I’ll leave until I’ve got more time or really feel like immersing myself with reading sims-stuff. I have a list of blogs etc. And the ones listed on my blog are generally the ones I read the minute they update.

Thanks for answering, Valneanne!

"I’m not precisely sure what I play for, seeing the town and the sims develop? Seeing how their decisions affect their friends and themselves? Yeah, that’s probably it."

That's exactly what I started doing with the original Legacy challenge. It's fun to watch things grow, seeing how a situation progresses and affects the later generations.
